What is an ADU?

ADU means “Accessory Dwelling Unit”.

According to the American Planning Association, “an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a smaller, independent residential dwelling unit located on the same lot as a stand-alone (i.e., detached) single-family home”.

Why have an ADU?

  • “Age in Place” - Provides a place for aging parents/relatives to stay

  • Provides a place for younger family members to stay

  • Provides an opportunity for rental income

  • To accommodate individuals with special needs

  • To use as a guesthouse/pool house

  • Provides a place for a full-time caregiver

  • Provides a place for empty nesters to downsize and rent out main house

  • Provides a flexible space for working, relaxing, exercising or performing hobbies
